How will the self-driving truck be charged?


We live in an age of rapid implementation of various technical innovations. And, as usual, in moments of technological change, some professions die off, while others are created. Undoubtedly, this will happen in the field of cargo transportation. Not immediately, but over time, the profession of a truck driver or even just a truck driver will be replaced by an operator in front of the control and monitoring panel.

Unmanned passenger cars are no longer surprising. Almost all car manufacturers, following #tesla, have started to implement self-driving systems in their cars. And if it is an electric car, then the drone option is already taken for granted here.

The same will apply to freight transport. Corresponding technical developments are already underway in our country. In particular, KamAZ has relevant developments, and has already tested the # CKAD roads, an unmanned cargo platform #evocargo. At the same time, the corresponding legal and regulatory framework is being developed.

But one question remains: «

The Swedish company #einride has been developing the Pod unmanned cargo platform since 2016. During this time, the product has been created, tested and is now almost ready for use by customers. The device, thanks to the well-known set of sensors, can move independently, and there is also a remote monitoring and control function, which is visually almost like a computer game.

The unmanned # electric Pod truck is capable of transporting 15-18 standard pallets, or 16 tons of cargo, in a range of 130-180 km. These indicators no longer cause a wow effect. But what will definitely be interesting is the automatic charging function, created in conjunction with Siemens.

The #siemens autonomous charging system is capable of charging almost any vehicle in a matter of minutes. So, in the future, the profession of a «refueller» on electric charges may also disappear. The robotic charging «column» itself will enter a «dialogue» with the car, use sensors to determine the location of the charging port, and provide the appropriate connector.
